Jerry Garrett K5JLG, Deputy Fire Marshal with Denton County Emergency Services, will present Denton County’s response to Hurricane Ike at our January 28th Club meeting. He will focus on Amateur Radio’s role in their response and the private-government partnership with the county.
Denton County Emergency Services includes the Department of Homeland Security, Emergency Management and Fire Marshal’s Office.
Four employees and two vehicles were part of Task Force Ike and Strike Force Orange. They spent 12 days providing emergency communications and command support. Denton County had three volunteer ham operators accompany the deployment.
Cities within the county also sent a large contingency of fire fighters, paramedics, trucks and specialty equipment for search and recovery operations.

Happy New Year!
Here we go!! Off and running with a new year of fun with the best hobby in the world! I am honored to serve as your President this year, along with great Officers and Directors! 2009 ended on a wonderful note with the excellent turnout for the HOTARC Christmas luncheon. I hope you enjoyed a wonderful holiday season with family, food—and lots of football! J
As we start off with a new year, we have several things on our calendar right off the bat, so “hold on to your hats,” and please save these dates in your appointment book:
· The McLennan County Skywarn training: Saturday, February 6
· The Baylor Bearathon special event: Saturday, March 20
· The Komen Race for the Cure special event: Saturday, April 24
Of course, these events are all meant to direct our energies to preparedness for real emergencies. To that end, don’t forget the weekly ARES training net. And our guest speaker this month should also get us into the right mood for the 2010 storm season! See you at the meeting!

Bakers Dozen Weather Net
activation procedures remain the same as last year. National Weather service
will request spotter activation when observed or potential severe weather
threatens the area. The net is automatically activated any time a severe
thunderstorm or a tornado warning is issued for McLennan County. As the storm
season nears, please be aware of conditions that could lead to net activation.
Monitor local television, radio, and the National Weather Service Weather Radio
for potential severe events. The net will be activated from the Waco-McLennan
County EOC or by one of the ARES Net Control Stations until the EOC can be
opened.
Things can happen fast when spotting. Since activation is the result of a warning, reports should relate directly to the type of warning issued. For severe thunderstorms, winds of more than 50 mph and any size hail (using coins for size) should be reported with exact location and time of occurrence. Please note that the size of hail for a thunderstorm to be considered SEVERE has been changed from ¾ inch to 1 inch. Please continue to report all occurrences of hail when spotting for the Bakers Dozen. This gives us an indication of which cells are producing hail and could be an indicator of larger hail to come. For tornados, wall clouds, wall clouds with rotation, funnel clouds, and tornados on the ground, insure that time of occurrence are reported immediately. In the case of an actual tornado on the ground, direction and speed of movement are needed. Report any visible damage and/or injuries associated with either type of storm. All other weather related reports should be held until requested by net control.
SKYWARN 2010 will be held
on 6 Feb 2010 at the new McLennan Community College Emergency
Services Building on Steinbeck Bend Road (click link for map) As you head
to the Waco Regional Airport from Waco, instead of heading north on Karl May
Drive (past the skeet range towards the terminal), continue southwest on
Steinbeck Bend. Basic SKYWARN will start at 0900 – coffee and donuts available
from 0830 – and run until about noon. The Advanced Class will start about 1300
and should be done by 1530. All Bakers Dozen Weather Net Storm Spotters should
attend a SKYWARN session at least every other year. We had 25+ in attendance
last year.
Good training and continued excellent spotter participation should see us through the severe weather season.
