We were saddened to see our dear friend and fellow amateur Ed Middlebrook KC5NT become a Silent Key last October. Per his generous request, at this month’s meeting we will auction off Ed’s ham radio equipment. I hope you’ve taken time to peruse the photos on our web page (see link on the Member’s Only page). We can now even accept credit card payments for your winning bids, thanks to our PayPal web page! All proceeds go to HOTARC.
This is an opportunity for Ed to be a blessing to all of us, but especially the new hams in our Club, as this is a great way to acquire some of the bits and pieces that he used to really enjoy our hobby to the fullest. The large items can be had at a bargain basement price at this small private auction, and most of the small pieces and parts will be free for the taking. That’s right! FREE! So, don’t miss out! Make plans to attend this month’s meeting!
P.S. There will also be several nice surprise items not part of Ed’s estate that will be included in the auction, too!

First of all, I would like to thank John, AC5CV, for serving as President during 2010. He did an outstanding job and I was glad to assist him.
Another year has come and gone. We had a very successful 2010 by serving the public. Our new event was TMOM and Jim Jud, KA5QKL, did an outstanding job in organizing the event. All the HOTARC members rallied around him to fill all the positions. Now it is time to get 2011 into action.
Our first event will be the Baylor Bearathon which was lightning- and rained-out last year. Maybe this year will be better. We need everyone to sign up to help.
At this month’s meeting we’ll have Ed Middlebrook’s gear for sale, the proceeds going to HOTARC, per his request. We’ll also have a few other surprise items as part of the auction, so come ready to expand your ham inventory.
We all need to think about what programs and events that we will support in 2011. Remember, HOTARC is your Club. The officers need to hear your ideas. Please take part in the discussion and the activities.
Rodney
K5YKC
HOTARC President

The Bakers Dozen Weather Net
activation procedures remain the same. National Weather service will request
spotter
activation when observed or potential severe weather threatens the area. The
net is automatically activated any time a severe thunderstorm or a tornado
warning is issued for McLennan County. As the storm season nears, please be
aware of conditions that could lead to net activation. Monitor local
television, radio, and the National Weather Service Weather Radio for potential
severe events. The net will be activated from the Waco-McLennan County EOC or
by one of the ARES Net Control Stations until the EOC can be opened.
Things can happen fast when spotting. As activation is a result of a warning, reports should relate directly to the type of warning issued. For severe thunderstorms, winds of more than 50 mph and any size hail (using coins for size) should be reported with exact location and time of occurrence. Please note that the size of hail for a thunderstorm to be considered SEVERE is now 1 inch. Nevertheless, please continue to report all occurrences of hail when spotting for the Bakers Dozen. This gives us an indication which cells are producing hail and could be an indicator of larger hail to come. For tornados, wall clouds, wall clouds with rotation, funnel clouds, and tornados on the ground, the times of occurrence need to be reported immediately. In the case of an actual tornado on the ground, direction and speed of movement are needed. Report any visible damage and/or injuries associated with either type of storm. All other weather related reports should be held until requested by net control.
SKYWARN 2011
will be held on 19 Mar 2011 at the McLennan
Community College Emergency Services Building on Steinbeck Bend, past Karl
May Drive (the road to the airport). Basic SKYWARN will start at 0900—coffee
and donuts available from 0830—and run until about noon. The advanced class
will start about 1315 and should be done by 1530. All Bakers Dozen Weather
Net storm spotters should attend a SKYWARN session at least every other
year. We had 25+ in attendance last year.
Good training and continued excellent spotter participation should see us through the severe weather season.

Discover the Magic of HF |
by John Chamberlain, AC5CV |
If you’re one of the many Technicians in our Club, you may
be dreaming of the day you will upgrade to General (it’s not that hard!) and
get on the HF bands and talk to the world! Getting some good used HF equipment
from an estate auction, like we’ll be having at this month’s meeting, is a
great way to start.
“But I hardly know anything about HF,” you say? The ARRL has
lots of online materials! For example, you can watch the slide show “Discover
the Magic” in 10-15 minutes, boost your knowledge and confidence, and give you
the nudge you need to take the plunge. Visit http://www.arrl.org/tutorials for this
and many more materials. Hint: Click the Slideshare button
to view full
screen, and use the keyboard cursor keys to easily advance the slides.
