A New Home for HOTARC!

by John Chamberlain, AC5CV

As we’ve been anticipating for several months, we now have a new monthly meeting place, beginning with the January Meeting of Members! The place is not hard to find, although it is a little “out of the city” and might seem like a dark drive during these winter months. In the “big picture,” it is located near the junction of Chapel Road and Old Lorena Road. More specifically, it is 12772 Chapel Road, Lorena, Texas 76655. There are a few different ways to easily reach it, depending on where you’re coming from.

Route 1: From Highway 6.

From Highway 6, exit at Imperial Drive, head south. Continue across Hewitt Drive, where the road changes to Chapel Road.  Drive about 5 min, to a block or so before you reach the “T” at Old Lorena Road: the white-walled workshop is all lit up on your right.

Route 2: From Highway 84.

From U.S. 84 (either Waco or points west), exit to Old Lorena Road and head south to Chapel Road. Turn left onto Chapel Road and, after about a block, the white-walled workshop is all lit up on your left.

Route 3: From Interstate 35.

From I35, exit at Lorena (southbound Exit 323; northbound Exit 322) and head west on Old Lorena Road to Chapel Road. Turn right onto Chapel Road and, after about a block, the white-walled workshop is all lit up on your left.

As part of the meeting, we’ll get to tour the facility and learn about Larry’s grand vision for the building. Come on out!

President’s Corner

by Scott Hamilton, K5ZOH

We’ve had some funny weather, but good DX since our last meeting. I hope that everyone has had the opportunity to enjoy the Winter hamming and the bit of relief from the dry Fall since out last get-together. It is going to be Spring before we know it!

Everyone should plan on coming to the meeting this week... we are in for a treat! As you can see in this issue, we are meeting at the brand new building built by Larry Bush W5NCD. It is really a great building and our program will be a tour of the facility. Let’s fill up the building at our meeting and congratulate its proud new owner.

73, Scott K5ZOH
HOTARC President

It’s time to renew your membership! Please send in or submit (online) your 2012 DUES. Thank you!

Severe Weather Season 2012

by Ed Hynan, KC5KNI
McLennan County Emergency Coordinator

Baker’s Dozen Weather Net activation procedures remain the same. National Weather service will request spotter activation when observed or potential severe weather threatens the area. The Net is automatically activated any time a severe thunderstorm or a tornado warning is issued for McLennan County. As the storm season nears, please be aware of conditions that could lead to Net activation. Monitor local television, radio, and the National Weather Service Weather Radio for potential severe events. The Net will be activated from the Waco-McLennan County EOC or by one of the ARES Net Control Stations until the EOC can be opened.

Things can happen fast when spotting. As activation is a result of a warning, reports should relate directly to the type of warning issued. For severe thunderstorms, winds of more than 50 mph and any size hail (using coins for size) should be reported with exact location and time of occurrence. Remember that the size of hail for a thunderstorm to be considered SEVERE is 1 inch. Please continue to report all occurrences of hail when spotting for the Bakers Dozen. This gives us an indication which cells are producing hail and could be an indicator of larger hail to come. For tornados, wall clouds, wall clouds with rotation, funnel clouds, and tornados on the ground, insure that time of occurrence are reported immediately. In the case of an actual tornado on the ground, direction and speed of movement are needed. Report any visible damage and/or injuries associated with either type of storm. All other weather related reports should be held until requested by Net control.

Head towards the Waco Regional Airport, but stay westbound on Steinbeck Bend Rd instead of heading to the airport terminal.

February 4, 2012
McLennan County

SKYWARN 2012 will be held on 4 Feb 2012 at the McLennan Community College Emergency Services Building. Basic SKYWARN will start at 0900 – coffee and donuts available from 0830 – and run until about noon. The advanced class will start about 1315 and should be done by 1530. All Bakers Dozen Weather Net Storm Spotters should attend a SKYWARN session at least every other year. We had 25+ in attendance last year.

Good training and continued excellent spotter participation should see us through the severe weather season.

License Training Classes

by John Chamberlain, AC5CV
HOTARC Education Committee Member

HOTARC’s training mission is in full swing, thanks to the efforts of your Education Committee, headed up by Clint Anderson, AE5CA. Clint conducted a successful General Class Training last October, resulting in three new General Class hams! Congratulations folks!

Next: Training for the Amateur Extra Class exam begins at 0900 this Saturday, January 28 at the W5NCD Workshop, with about a half dozen hams enrolled. It’s still not too late for you to sign up, pay up, and show up to take advantage of the group effort to upgrade to your Amateur Extra Class ham radio license. There are a total of three class meetings planned, culminating with a special VE Test Session on February 25 to take the Extra Class exam. (See our web site for info.)

Looking ahead: Similar preparation assistance for the Technician Class exam is being planned for Saturdays March 17 and 24, to be held at the W5NCD Workshop. This is an excellent opportunity for friends, family, and co-workers to climb aboard the fun and rewarding experience of our hobby. Send them to our website, where we will soon be posting an online registration form with other additional information.
