Community Outreach in Waco

by Terry Williams, KD5KJU

waco police department

Our speaker this month will be Sergeant Mark Mitzel, he is over the Community Outreach section of the Waco Police Department. He has been a police officer for 33 years. Mark will talk about the Community Outreach part of the Waco PD. He will cover programs such as the Waco Citizens Police Academy and Citizens On Patrol—programs in which you can become involved as a citizen. He will cover some of the programs his section offers as presentations for organizations, such as Neighborhood Associations, church groups, businesses and homeowners.  Mark will probably cover some pointers on Identity Theft and other crimes that are common and how to avoid becoming a victim. He will try to answer any questions you have regarding the police department or about something you may have personally experienced and have a question about.

President’s Corner

by John Chamberlain, AC5CV

Farewell to Dear Members

John AC5CV

The Club established the Lifetime Member position several years ago as a way to recognize our most honored Members and make it possible for them to easily continue an active role in the Club without requiring them to pay dues every year. Our Club has indeed suffered a great loss during the past month, with the passing of two of our Lifetime Members: JW Roach W5AYX and, just last week, Otto Hackfeld KI5QT. Their contributions will be sorely missed. This is one reason why Technician classes are so important to bring in new amateurs and, potentially, new HOTARC members. We are planning just such a class in March. Do you know someone interested in amateur radio? Send them to our website for more info.

You’ve surely seen the emails from our Special Event Chairman, KA5QKL Jim: he’s looking for volunteers for the Bearathon on March 20. This will take place before our next meeting, so please get in touch with Jim ASAP to volunteer. And, coming right around the corner is the Race for the Cure. Check out our Club Calendar on our web site. Jim will need your help there, too!

Skywarn 2010 was a great success at the new MCC Emergency Services building. Now everyone needs to get into the “ARES mood” as storm season approaches. For starters, are you registered? See Ed’s article below.

Finally, with the many changes and new growth taking place in Waco, we are going to learn a lot from our guest speaker at this month’s meeting. So, I hope that you’re making plans to attend! See you there!

John AC5CV
HOTARC President

Reminder: Have you renewed your HOTARC Membership?

Will You Get Involved?
ARES Needs Some Help

by Ed Hynan, KC5KNI
McLennan County Emergency Coordinator

McLennan County ARES will soon be in the process of verifying all membership information. This is done every 2 years to insure that everyone’s contact information is fresh and correct. I will have copies of your current ARES data sheet (expires 30 April 2010) at the February and March club meetings. Those not seen in person by the March meeting will receive their data sheet in the mail. Please review your data sheet, make any necessary corrections or additions, and return it to me no later than the15th of April. New ID Cards will be issued as I receive the sheets with an expiration date of April 2012. Individuals who are current ARES members that do not return a data sheet will be placed in the inactive member file and will not receive a new ID Card.

As I look over the names of the current ARES members, I see members of HOTARC that are not ARES members. I can’t understand why every member of HOTARC is not a member of ARES. The price is right—FREE. All that is required is a valid ham license and a willingness to help. If requested to assist in an event or emergency situation, participation is still voluntary. If you feel that you don’t have the time and/or membership conflicts with the job—remember we may face a situation where the job is affected by the emergency and/or things that occupy your time may in fact be cancelled. The ARES application lists availability—24/7, nights & weekends, and general. Pick the one that best suits your schedule.

Amateur radio presentation at Skywarn 2010

A real emergency is going to take all the resources that we have, and after the event happens is not the time to join ARES. Remember, effective this year, those wanting to work disaster response must have completed four of the free FEMA courses: National Incident Management System (NIMS), IS-700; Incident Command System (ICS), IS-100 and 200; and The National Response Plan (NRP), IS-800. Current net controls are considered major players for disaster response and especially need the courses. Links to the FEMA Courses are also posted on the HOTARC web site home page, hotarc.org. Without these basic courses you will not qualify for access to secure and/or restricted locations. Our support will most likely be needed in the Emergency Operations Centers, Incident Command Posts, Police or Fire facilities, and hospitals, just to name a few. If you are not a member, go to our web site hotarc.org, fill out an application, send it in, and become a registered ARES member. I also have applications at all Club meetings.

Remember, it is not a question of if it will happen, but when it will occur. Also, it is better to be a small part of the solution rather than a big part of the problem. Get involved! You’ll be glad you did.

Me, a Volunteer? What Can *I* Do?

by Jim Judd, KA5QKL
HOTARC
Special Events Chairman

I have always been a person that looks on the positive side. You know, the cup’s half full, the gas tank’s half full, and so forth. Even after my paralysis episode in 2004-2005, the positive side always came through. I guess it has to do with how I see people in my life as examples, both good and bad, that shaped my outlook of life. Most of my kinfolks were very positive people who believed in giving everyone a fair shake in whatever was going on. On the other side of my life was my curiosity of “how things were made” and, if I didn’t know, very soon it was, “how things came apart”—to the frustration of my parents. These two parts of my life had to come together sooner or later, and formed what I am now: that is, an Amateur Radio Operator in the Amateur Radio Service.

To volunteer my radio abilities I believe, keeps my skills sharp, helps me solve problems that I might encounter, and keeps my equipment running as it should. I also get to talk to other “Hams” who like to do the same thing as me: help others. I have been disabled since 2005 and as you probably can tell, don’t walk very well or far. But I can hold a microphone as good as anybody! I get enjoyment out of helping and I believe it helps me by getting me outside and not focused on my problems. I enjoy going to club meetings, dinners, or activities where I get to have a fun time with others who have the same interests as me. I hope you enjoy doing the same things and I encourage you to volunteer for HOTARC activities. Being a volunteer resulted in a big return of enjoyment for me and I know it will for you too.  Be an Amateur Radio Operator that enjoys the many fun activities coming up this year and helps others in the process. I hope to see you around! 73

Baylor Bearathon: Volunteers Needed!

by Jim Judd, KA5QKL
Special Event Chairman
t

It’s BEARATHON Race time again. This year the race will be on March 20, 2010 starting at 7:30 or 8 a.m. until around 11 a.m. They have changed the race course path and distance this year by doing two things: (1) The race will go further back into Cameron Park this year and (2) they will use University Parks Drive to go back instead of going back on MLK. (Click the map here.)

The Bearathon Committee really appreciated our work last year and I know we can do it again this year with your help. If you would like to participate, and I hope you will, please send me an email at jjud654@aol.com. When we do a good job for those racers and help the community all at the same time, we are doing exactly what I think Ham Radio stands for: Service to Others. So PLEASE give a little of your time to help with this race. Thanks and 73!
