President’s Corner

by John Chamberlain, AC5CV

Happy Thanksgiving! …and soon it will be Merry Christmas! ’Tis the season! And to celebrate that with our ham radio family, our annual HOTARC Christmas Luncheon is to be held at Ryan’s on Saturday, December 11. I hope you and your family can make plans to join us! If so, please contact Rodney K5YKC to let him know, so we can be sure to have a seat for you.

The second most important thing happening at this time of year (food is always first, isn’t it?) is our Annual Meeting and Officer Elections. You might have noticed that my name has moved down the list in the table above. I’ve had a fun time leading the Club these past 12 months, but I found that being an active Member and managing our web site and publishing the monthly HOTLINE and serving as President, not to mention all the other employment and family responsibilities, was just more than I could comfortably handle. So, I am going to admit my limits, try to stay healthy, and say thank you for the confidence you’ve shown towards me as your President in 2010. And I also want to shout out a BIG THANK YOU to the folks who have stepped up to put their names on the list for 2011—some for the first time, others willing to “re-up.” It will be my honor to support them in the coming year. C’mon out to the meeting this Thursday and let’s vote ‘em in!

Farewell (as President), and I hope you and your family have a blessed holiday season!

John AC5CV
HOTARC President

Final Request for 2011 ARES Net Control Station Volunteers;  SKYWARN 2011

by Ed Hynan, KC5KNI
McLennan County Emergency Coordinator

I currently have seven volunteers for Net Controls in 2011: KC5KNI, N5MVL, KD5KJU, KA5KQL, AE5CA, AE5DE, and K5YKC

The ARES/Bakers Dozen Training Net is held each Monday night at 8 PM on the 145.15 Repeater. I would like to provide this excellent training opportunity any additional members of McLennan County ARES.

For any additional volunteers, if you would like the opportunity to serve as a weekly Net Control please let me know via e-mail at KC5KNI@arrl.net . Let me know if there are any Mondays that would not be convenient (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and/or 5th). Please reply by 15 Dec 2010.

I will publish the 2011 schedule, provide all with a copy of the preamble, log sheet, and a letter of Instruction. This is what amateur radio is all about: preparation for emergency service.

Additionally, we still have room for one or two more individuals to be primary Net Controls for the Bakers Dozen Weather Net. KC5KNI and KD5KJU have had excellent help from AE5CA this last season. The severe weather season is fast approaching. If you would like to volunteer and work from the EOC running the Weather Net, please let me know. SKYWARN and some additional training and background checks will be required.

SKYWARN 2011 will be held later this year than in the past. It is scheduled for Saturday, 19 Mar 2011 at the McLennan Community College Emergency Services Center. The basic course will be offered from 0900-1200 and the advanced course will run from 1315 to 1530. Mark your calendars now!
