President’s Corner |

It has been an interesting year for our HOTARC bunch! Just last month we saw some interesting “home brew” at the November meeting—always fun, and a good tradition.
And a couple weekends ago Clint AE5CA and friends did a great job with the Boy Scout merit badge project. The participating Scouts now know a lot more about the radio technology we know and love, and there are a bunch of new merit badges for them. too. There’s bound to be some new additions to our hobby from that group.
Several of us had the opportunity to tour the Larry Bush W5NCD workshop/playground. What a great facility! I am looking forward to having HOTARC meetings there so everyone can appreciate Larry’s work, and possibly sign up to play with his toys! (More from Larry on that later...)
The holiday season is on us again, a great time for our own family and our amateur family. If you (and some of your family) can join us for the HOTARC Christmas Luncheon this Saturday (3 Dec 2011), be sure to let Rodney K5YKC know ASAP. Good friends, good food, and door prizes!
Finally, I hope to see you at the important Annual Meeting this Thursday, 1 Dec 2011. In any case, I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year! And find some time to get on the air! :-)
73, Scott K5ZOH

Last Chance to Volunteer for ARES Net Control Station — HELP!! |
by Ed Hynan, KC5KNI |
This is the last chance to volunteer before I make the 2012 schedule. Currently W5TTL, AE5CA, KA5QKL, K5YKC, KC5JWD, and KC5KNI have indicated they would serve as Net Control. I have not heard from AC5DE or KD5KJU (2011 NCs) for 2012 as of yet. There is still plenty of room for additional volunteers. I need any additional confirmations by 10 Dec 2011.
Reminder: The ARES/Bakers Dozen Training Net is held each Monday
night at 8 PM on the 145.15 Repeater. Let’s hear you check in!
I provide all the Net Controls with a copy of the preamble (that is, how to open the Net), log sheet, and a letter with Instructions. If you want to participate, please let me know by 10 December 2011. This is what amateur radio is all about—preparation for emergency service. It begins with the leadership of the Net Control operators. That can be you! Just as you learned how to operate your own radios, you can learn this!
Finally, SKYWARN 2012 has been scheduled for Saturday 4 Feb 2012. It will be held again at the McLennan Community College Emergency Services Center from 0900-1530, with a break for lunch. As in past years, both the Basic and Advanced sessions will be offered. Make plans to attend this informative program presented by the Fort Worth Office of the National Weather Service.
HOTARC Christmas Luncheon |
by John Chamberlain, AC5CV |
|
|
Mark your calendar and make plans to attend HOTARC’s annual Christmas Luncheon. This year again we’ll meet at Raymond’s Southern Kitchen in Lorena, on Saturday, Dec 3 at Noon. Take Exit 322 off I-35, and see the restaurant on the east side of the freeway. In addition to the always great food (Dutch treat) and fellowship, we’ll have a bunch of Door Prizes to give away. You or any of your family members you bring along could win one—just for attending! So, give Rodney K5YKC a holler today (email or phone) and let him know you’re coming so we can be sure to have enough seats reserved. See ya there! |
2012 Special Events Wrap-Up |
by
Jim Jud KA5QKL |
It seems hard to believe we’re
done with November! My recent participation with Clint and the BSA Radio merit
badge reminded me of when I became an Eagle Scout in 1969 in Riesel. Talking
with some of the boys brought back memories of a fun-filled time in my own life:
hunting, fishing, and weekend campouts. Those were the days! My fun today includes
talking on my radios. I can’t help thinking that the Scouts practicing on the
other end of my radio might just grow up to enjoy our hobby, too. But they need
people like us to get them started and help them along. As unlikely as it
seems, some of us are getting older. So we need these “new” Hams to
keep Clubs like ours alive. Let’s show them how to do special events like bike
races and marathons, and it will be easy for them to slide right into emergency
operations. Oh, and by the way, when I get to Heaven, I plan on having a radio
with a megawatt linear, a 2000 foot tower and 20 element ten band yagi beam—BUT….that
stuff will just be sitting there, since all I’ll need will be “thought power!!”
:-)
I hope to see all of you at the meeting on December 1st and the
party on the 3rd. Stay safe and God Bless!
